
When he was 27, he enrolled at the National Theatre School of Denmark and graduated in 1995. He was also a part of The Killing, a drama series that was aired across the world. He was later featured in Those Who Kill II and Borgen III, two other highly acclaimed Danish drama series. He also played a major role in Sherlock, which is a BBC drama where he played the role of Charles Augustus Magnussen, whose blackmailer. In the American television series House of Cards, he was the president of Russia. He won an International Emmy Award in 2018 for his part in Danish TV drama Herrens Veje, which was shown in the UK in 2019 under the name Ride Upon the Storm. Mikkelsen is proficient in English, Swedish and German. He also has several accents. Mikkelsen has stated that his brother and he learned English initially through listening to Monty Python recordings and watching comedy sketches.
